This is one of a pair of salt cellars made in Venice, Italy, about 1570.

This sculptural salt cellar is derived partly from the design of a celebrated monument in Messina, Sicily: the fountain of Orion by the Italian sculptor and architect Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli (about 1507–63).
